An experienced guide will take us on a virtual tour of this historic location.

Join AARP Virginia and attendees across the U.S. for a virtual tour of Jamestown Settlement on April 21, 2021 at 1:00PM ET. An experienced guide will tell the story of how the settlement was first started in 17th-century Virginia, and how the arrival of English colonists in Jamestown in 1607 lead to cultural encounters and events that planted the seeds of a new nation.

Our guide, will examine the events of 1619 that brought the first documented Africans to Virginia and led to the creation of race and color in English North America. The program will also examine how Africans and English indentured servants were once allies, and that this unity was dissolved with the establishment of slave laws and racial categories. The guide for this presentation is Mark Summers, Director of Public and Youth Programs for Jamestown Rediscovery Foundation. As an historian on the archaeology team, Mark not only examines documents for context, but writes publications, exhibition scripts, and walking tours about historical and archaeological topics. He regularly lectures about Jamestown to the public, and has appeared on many media sites including the Washington Post, Associated Press, National Geographic, and PBS.
