Hear the stories of Asian American veterans and the individuals who spearheaded efforts to honor them with the Congressional Gold Medal.
About the Event
For generations, Asian Americans who have served in our nation’s military often have been overlooked despite their remarkable contributions. This webinar will explore the compelling stories of veterans from the Japanese 442nd Regimental Combat Team, Filipino WWII servicemen and Chinese American veterans—all of whom bravely defended our country while facing discrimination. Only years later were their sacrifices recognized with the prestigious Congressional Gold Medal, the nation’s highest civilian award.
Join us as we learn about the legislative journey and advocacy that led to this overdue honor and hear firsthand from dedicated individuals who spearheaded these efforts. Daphne Kwok, vice president, Asian American & Pacific Islander Audience Strategy, AARP Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, will serve as moderator.
Featured speakers include:
- Donna Cole, who led the campaign for the Congressional Gold Medal for Japanese American WWII veterans
- Christy Poisot, an advocate for Filipino WWII veterans’ recognition with the Congressional Gold Medal
- Edmond Gor, who was instrumental in honoring Chinese WWII veterans with the Congressional Gold Medal
