Ballet Zurich’s production of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King is a contemporary take on Tchaikovsky’s ballet by Christian Spuck, focusing on the fantastical and dark elements of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s story. Spuck’s choreography highlights the absurdity and humor of the characters, transforming Drosselmeier’s workshop into an old revue theater. The performance features Tchaikovsky’s score, sometimes played by a simple accordion and other times by the Philharmonia Zürich, recorded at the Opernhaus Zürich in 2018.
