New Prints In Focus is a new initiative at IPCNY designed to highlight the ongoing work of our New Prints Artist Development Awardees. This second presentation of New Prints In Focus highlights work by the two Artists-in-Residence selected from Homebody: New Prints 2020/Winter— Olivia Fredricks and Evgenia Kim.
"During my residency at IPCNY, I explored the role of forced migration in the formation of the contemporary Korean diaspora. Koreans formed two distant, yet very similar communities in the USSR and Cuba in the early 1900s. They were lured there by promises of prosperity and fell victims to different political agendas. Most Koreans ended up working on agave plantations in Cuba, or growing various crops to support military troops in the USSR.
With the limited access to mostly non-existent archives, I try to balance the paradox of articulation of the private and public dialect. It is not always clear how exactly our families' voices arrive—or fail to arrive—in our work, but by looking back at one’s own family story, generation by generation through moves, jobs, changes or losses, houses, illnesses, social expectations, and so on...we can trace our connection to each other as well as to a community, whether it be a place or a feeling.”
ABOUT EVGENIA KIM
Kim is a multidisciplinary artist. By raising the question of identity she highlights the difficulty of making origin a defining factor in the consideration of art. She uses traditional textile patterns and images that might relate to the Korean diaspora to investigate what it means to be a displaced person. She received her MFA in oil painting from Moscow State Region University and MFA in printmaking from The University of the Arts, Philadelphia. She currently resides in New York.
"Since moving to Maine from Arkansas, I have become distinctly aware of the differences in architectural and domestic aesthetics of older New England homes compared to those in the South. Cedar shingle siding particularly interests me because it makes buildings look scaled or even furry. This style of shingle was invented to expand and contract with the weather conditions, further animating the image of these houses as breathing creatures. This modular kinetic installation illustrates the “living” aspect of these houses. The breathing wall conjures up an image of a fluidity not normally associated with buildings. While quiet and delicate, this piece urges viewers to see the built environment as a site of whimsy and play.”
ABOUT OLIVIA FREDRICKS
Fredricks is a printmaker, zine-maker, and illustrator based out of Portland, Maine. She graduated from the University of Arkansas’s School of Art with a BFA in Studio Art, with an emphasis in printmaking, in May 2019. She is now an Artist-in-Residence and Studio Tech at Maine College of Art. Her work considers personal experience and domestic objects, and has been shown in numerous exhibitions around the country, including the Screenprint Biennial, PrintAustin Expo, and in IPCNY's Homebody: New Prints 2020/Winter.
