Join us for a conversation with the preeminent filmmaker, literary scholar, journalist and cultural critic Henry Louis Gates Jr.
About the Event
Henry Louis Gates Jr. has published numerous books and produced and hosted an array of documentary films. The Black Church (PBS) and Frederick Douglass: In Five Speeches (HBO), which he executive produced, each received Emmy nominations. Finding Your Roots, Gates’s PBS series on genealogy and genetics, returned for its 10th season in January.
His recent project with Andrew Curran explores the “invention of race” in the 18th century. Who’s Black and Why? publishes essays from the 1739 Bordeaux Royal Academy of Sciences revealing the theories that led to categorization of people into racial groups.
If you had one question to ask Gates, what would it be? We’ll gather your questions and spend a lively hour and a half in a wide-ranging conversation.
Henry Louis Gates Jr. is the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor and Director of the Hutching Center for African and African American Research at Harvard University. This program is presented by the Lifelong Learning Institute at Virginia Tech.
