Hear about the challenging 1,000-kilometer horse race across part of Mongolia from a Virginia professor who competed in it.
About the Event
The Mongol Derby has been touted as the world’s longest and hardest horse race. A 1,000 km (621 mile) race on semi-feral ponies across the Mongolian steppe, the Derby is not for the faint of heart!
Rebecca Hester, an associate professor in the department of science, technology and society at Virginia Tech, shares her compelling personal story of the race, reflecting on her decision to ride in it, the preparation required and the unbelievable outcome for her. She will also talk about Mongolia’s beauty and its people and their relationship to the animals on the steppe.
Rebecca has been riding (and falling off) horses since she was five. This virtual program on the Mongol Derby is offered by AARP Virginia and the Lifelong Learning Institute at Virginia Tech.
