Thirty years ago, armed with nothing more than a growing sense of concern and steely determination, we set out to preserve and protect 500 acres of land along the shores of Sengekontacket from over-development. Being avid golfers, a key component of our plan included the creation of an 18 hole championship golf course. The rest, as they say, is history.
Back in 1979, however, there were very few who shared our vision or optimism about the golf part. Vineyard golfers were few and far between. When asked about the course at it's opening, we responded, "When it matures in a few years, it will be one of the best courses in New England. It's an interesting, tough and scenically exquisite course." At the time, most considered our comments hyperbole at best, and in fact, we did prove wrong on two counts. First, it did take far more than a few years to mature, and when it finally did come into its own, it wasn't simply called one of the best courses in New England, it is considered by many to be one of the better courses in the country.
