Danby Olde Country and Bluegrass Festival

245 Tifft Road
Danby, VT 05739

How did old country & bluegrass music get to an old farm in Danby? Well some of you may not remember Ron Wood, and most of you will. He was born and raised in Danby, he always liked his country & bluegrass music. He was a big old strapping guy, and he was at all the festivals, with his trademark old jug that said bluegrass tuning fluid on it. Ron liked to strum his Martin guitar, and blow on his harmonicas. Well he knew Pete & Mary Powers, who own the land the festival is on, and convinced them we should try a small show, nothing big, and our snowmobile club could sponsor it. He finally got permission from Pete & Mary, now it was my turn, as I was president of the club at the time. I really didn't want to do it, but after a while he convinced me, and we got started.

It was to be a small show, one day, and he would take care of everything. Sadly, he never got to see his dream unfold, as he got sick and passed away. If today he could see what his one day show has developed into, he would be proud, Ron, we miss you.

Well that's how we got started, now with the help of Herb Fredrick's, who furnished all the lumber, sawed it all, and was chief engineer, he built our fabulous stage, and our nice cook shack. All the silver haired boys from the club were there, pounding nails, and getting dirty. I don't have to mention names, because you know who you are. So we give a big thanks to Herb, for all that he has done for us, he also really likes our french fries. It kind of goes like this, I book the bands, Mary handles the cook shack, Tonya does the breakfast, Dave & Cher, handle the help and lay out the parking. This year will be our 6th year, we are not a huge festival, but we are growing every year, and thanks to all you people that come and listen, or just for the field picking, you have made Danby one of the nicest festivals around, very friendly, and lots of fun. They say you meet the nicest people on a Honda, maybe so, but you meet the nicest people at old country & bluegrass festivals. The people and bands have been so nice to me, and I am just learning. I want to say thank you to Candi Sawyer & Linda Berry, because when I ask how to do something, they are always willing to share with me what they know, and that means a lot to me. So as I close this, thanks Ron for bringing this fabulous little festival to Danby.
