Voters 50-plus are the driving force behind every election. In 2020, the 182,000 voters age 50-plus in Maine constituted 59% of the electorate. AARP calls on all candidates to pay attention to the issues that matter to voters 50-plus and their families.

Two Key Questions for Federal Candidates in the 2024 Elections

1. Candidates, how would you help family caregivers?

More than 48 million family caregivers assist their older parents, spouses, siblings, grandparents and other loved ones so they can live independently in their homes. That means 1 in 5 voters is a caregiver. Yet they don’t get the support they need while providing $600 billion in unpaid labor annually.

It’s time to change that for Maine's 166,000 family caregivers and all caregivers nationwide.

Both parties have a big opportunity to win these voters. Caregivers vote and they can make the difference in a close election. AARP is advocating for solutions that will save caregivers time and money - and give them more support.

2. Candidates, do you see a path in Congress for a bipartisan solution to protect Social Security?

If Washington doesn’t take action, in 10 years Social Security could be cut by 20%. It’s time for both parties to come together and agree on a solution to fix the Social Security shortfall so we can protect the financial security of current and future generations. In Maine, more than 360,000 individuals benefit from this remarkable program. AARP urges candidates to protect and save Social Security so Mainers and all Americans get the money they’ve earned.
