Westmoreland County Woman Recipient of AARP Pennsylvania Andrus Award for Community Service

Harrisburg, PA –Patricia “Trisha” Wendell of Penn Township, Westmoreland County, has been selected to receive the 2024 AARP Pennsylvania Andrus Award for her efforts to protect the environment. The Andrus Award for Community Service is named in honor of AARP founder Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus. It is the highest honor presented by AARP recognizing outstanding individuals age 50 and older who are sharing their experience, talents, and skills to enrich the lives of others.
As a retired elementary teacher and board member of Protect PT (Penn Township), Wendell tapped into her years as an educator to become an effective activist informing others and helping to amplify the voices of those most affected by environmental issues in her community. Her tireless efforts to raise awareness and mobilize support for policies that protect ecosystems embodies Dr. Andrus’ motto “To Serve, Not to be Served.”
When notified of the award, Wendell said she was stunned.
“I’m just trying to do the right thing for my neighbors, their children, and future generations who will live here,” she added. “I always want to be part of the solution.”

Recipients of the Andrus Award are chosen for their ability to enhance the lives of AARP members and prospective members, improve their communities, and inspire others to volunteer.
