Throughout the year, AARP on Long Island volunteers honor veterans by placing clusters of flags at various locations.

It’s part of a Salute to Veterans program in both Nassau and Suffolk counties, especially leading up to Flag Day, Memorial Day and Veterans Day.

Attending and sponsoring community events allow AARP to share information about discounts, financial security and caregiving that focus on veterans.

Here are a few upcoming opportunities to support vets.

Wednesday, Oct. 16, 6:30 p.m.: AARP on Long Island is sponsoring the annual United Veterans Beacon House Gala at the Heritage Club at Bethpage, 99 Quaker Meeting House Road, in Farmingdale. The nonprofit provides housing assistance for vets.

Sunday, Oct. 27, 8 a.m.: AARP on Long Island will be the water station sponsor at the 5th Annual Suffolk County Marathon/Half Marathon/10K and 5K, and Freedom Fest in the village of Patchogue.

Saturday and Sunday, November 23 and 24, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.: AARP and JVC Broadcasting will be hosting a Thanksgiving food drive serving vulnerable Long Island veterans. Drop off nonperishables at the ShopRite in Patchogue.
