Music and Community with “Celebrando con AARP”

For two engaging hours last weekend, the virtual concert “Celebrando con AARP” filled computer screens with lively percussion, guitar and impressive vocals. The broadcast featured performances from talented artists David Farias, Shelly Lares, David Marez, Chente Barrera, Ram Herrera and Los Texmaniacs.

In its seventh year, the annual event celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month and interspersed the performances with critical community information and resources for San Antonians.

John Vasquez, AARP Texas Executive Council member and volunteer, urged viewers to exercise their right to vote.

“AARP has a proud 35-year history of nonpartisan voter engagement,” he said. “We encourage you to take advantage of opportunities to vote safely, such as voting by mail or voting early in person.”

You are eligible for a mail-in ballot if you are 65 or older; are disabled; will be away from your home county during voting periods; or are in jail but otherwise eligible. The last day to request a mail-in ballot is Oct.23, early voting takes place Oct. 13 to Oct. 30 and Election Day is Nov. 3. Visit www.votetexas.gov for a mail-in ballot application and more information.

Viewers also learned about BiblioTech, Bexar County’s all-digital public library. Any Bexar County resident of any age can sign up for free access to thousands of e-books and movies in a variety of languages.

Lisa Rodriguez, AARP Texas manager of outreach and advocacy, highlighted two free upcoming events with trailblazer Cristela Alonzo, a pioneering stand-up comedian who made TV history in 2014 as the first Latino to create, write and star in a network sitcom.

On Friday, Oct. 9, AARP in San Antonio will host an evening of comedy with Alonzo. Join us for a fun-filled event as Alonzo draws on her experience growing up as a South Texas Latina, Rodriguez said.

On Wednesday, Oct. 14, Alonzo returns for a conversation about her family, her career in Hollywood and what it means to age in a Latinx context.

You can register for the Oct. 9 event here and the Oct. 14 event here
