More South Dakotans Now Eligible for Medicaid

Posted on 06/30/23 by The AARP Bulletin

An estimated 42,000 more South Dakotans will be able to sign up for Medicaid coverage as of July 1.

Voters last fall approved a constitutional amendment to expand the government health insurance program to South Dakota residents under 65 who earn less than 138 percent of the federal poverty level. That’s about $20,120 for an individual in 2023.

South Dakota is among 40 states and the District of Columbia that have opted to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act.

To check whether you are eligible for Medicaid or to apply, go to dss.sd.gov/medicaid and select Eligibility. Or find a local Department of Social Services office at dss.sd.gov/findyourlocaloffice for in-person help.

Information, including where to get local help, is also available at getcoveredsouthdakota.org.
