Learn How AARP New Mexico is Working in Santa Fe

Posted on 10/29/24

While many people might be familiar with the discounts and insurance products AARP offers, they may not know about the work AARP does at the local level or the kinds of resources AARP has that can make everyday living easier.

To show people the many sides of AARP, AARP New Mexico is conducting an evening reception, Nov. 6, in Santa Fe to show the community the work that is being done right in their hometown.

“We want people to know that AARP has a lot to offer and has a presence not only in the state but in Santa Fe in particular,” said Gary Williams, AARP New Mexico Associate State Director for Community Outreach.

“So, we are having a kind of get to know us better event at Hotel Santa Fe to let not only our members know about the work we do here but the public as well,” he said.

“For example, AARP has a lot of resources for family caregivers and also helps people learn how not to become victims of identity theft and fraud,” Williams said.

AARP New Mexico also has a team of about 25 volunteers that work the State Legislature every Session to advocate on issues that impact the 50 plus and their families such as retirement savings, paid sick leave, funding for senior services, and broadband expansion just to name a few.

“We are also working closely with city officials to have Santa Fe become part of the Age Friendly Network, which means officials will look at ways to make the city more livable so that people can age in place – infrastructure that benefits people of all ages,” Williams said.

“We have also invited people from our AARP partners both the AARP Tax Aide program as well as the AARP Driver Safety programs to join us so they can talk about what they have to offer in the Santa Fe area,” he said.

The event will be Wednesday, Nov. 6, at the Hotel Santa Fe, 1501 Paseo De Peralta, 87501, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.
