Don’t let cybercriminals ruin your holiday season—protect yourself from identity theft by shredding old papers.

While much of modern life is conducted online, bills, pay statements, medical forms and other sensitive documents still contain critical data that should be disposed of safely.

AARP in Houston is holding a free shredding event on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 9 a.m. to noon. Bring up to three boxes of materials to Lindale Medical Plaza, 615 North Loop East.

Register at aarp.cvent.com/TX-12-8-ShredNS or 877-926-8300.

AARP in Houston’s Isabel Longoria reminds members to also remain vigilant for scams during the holiday season.

“Scammers often prey on your good nature,” Longoria said. “Make sure to do a quick web search of nonprofit organizations before donating money to causes you care about.”

If you do get taken, reach out. “Don’t be embarrassed,” she stressed. “If you suspect your money or ID has been stolen, call AARP’s Fraud Watch Helpline at 877-908-3360. We’ll help you report the situation to the right people and hold scammers accountable. If you don’t call, we can’t help.”
