Check Out AARPCO's 2022 Legislative Wrap-up

Most are familiar with AARP’s advocacy efforts at the federal level, but did you know that AARP has a robust presence at the state level, too?

This is important because Colorado is the 4th fastest growing state for those who are 65+ and state demographers anticipate this number to grow from 870,000 to 1.2 million between 2020 and 2030 alone.

That’s why AARP Colorado and its Volunteer Legislative Advocacy Committee continues to fight on behalf of its members and the 50+ population. Comprised of 14 volunteers who actively engage with the state legislature, the team supports policies that benefit the 50+ community, oppose those that don't, and works alongside partners to ensure AARP’s approximately 670,000 members in Colorado are top of mind for state lawmakers drafting legislation.

In the last few years, AARP Colorado has successfully championed bills that create an automatic state-facilitated retirement savings plan for all Coloradans without access to one, worked to aid uninsured individuals in obtaining health care coverage, and championed increased protections for the health and safety of those in long-term care facilities.

During the 2022 session alone, the team actively followed 119 bills and supported more than 70 of them. Of those, 66 were signed by the governor and advocates submitted a combined 17 written and oral testimonies. Of these, most fell into three categories: health and healthcare, housing, and livability.

From access to accountability to affordability, AARP Colorado’s legislative advocates fought hard for the right of older adults to be empowered and protected and will continue to do so in the years ahead.
