Are you ready to celebrate Dia de Muertos and Mexican culture right here in our comunidad? Climb aboard Día de Muertos train this fall!
Four cars on the CTA’s Pink Line are sporting stunning artwork by local artist Elizabeth Reyes to draw attention to all that’s happening in Pilsen and Little Village.
The artwork – which features iconic skeletons, colorful carnations and a darkened Chicago skyline – is intended to help tell the story that “in a city of neighborhoods, somos una comunidad (we are one community).”
The project came about through the work of AARP staff and volunteers, who worked with the Pilsen Arts & Culture Committee (a task force of the Pilsen Planning Committee) on the plan to decorate the interior and exterior of the train as a mobile mural, and to install complementary artwork on signs and billboards throughout the area. The vision expanded to include the Little Village community and decoration of the arch that welcomes people into what has been referred to as the Capital of the Mexican Midwest.
“This was such a labor of love and we think it really speaks to the reverence we feel for our families, friends and loved ones during this spiritually significant time,” said Bob Gallo, AARP Illinois state director. “We hope that when Chicagoans see this artwork, it spurs them to come to Pilsen and Little Village to join in the celebration.”
You can come to the Museum of Mexican Art and create your own ofrendas (altars) during the Day of the Dead Xicago event in Pilsen on Sunday, Oct. 28. There’s also a two-day art walk, where you can visit artists at work during the “Pilsen Open Studios” event Oct. 20-21. Or come to Villarte, a Little Village Arts Festival on Nov. 3-4.
“AARP is thrilled to be able to help celebrate one of the most important holidays for the Mexican American community in Chicago and highlight the talent of one of the city’s own Latina artists,” said AARP Illinois Associate State Director Álvaro R. Obregón.
