AZ Training Clinics for Triathlon/5k/half marathon

Posted on 02/05/19 by Alex, AARP Blog Author

Have you ever thought about of doing a triathlon a half marathon or a 5K?

Dana Marie Kennedy (AARP AZ State Director) completing an Ironman race

Well you are NOT alone!  Sometimes just training with others is all the motivation you need!  Did you know there are a lot of great triathletes and runners who trained for their first triathlon in their 50’s!  We like to try new ways to get people active and involved which is why we are the Finish Line sponsors at this year’s Tri 4 the Cure.  This is a great triathlon for people who are beginning triathletes.  They have swim clinics, bike training rides and other organized activities.  If you are interested please sign up for one or all of the sessions.  The distances for the Super Sprint is Swim 200m pool swim, Bike 12km (2 loops), Run 2km. If a triathlon is more than you are willing to commit they also have a duathlon (bike and run) or an aquabike (swim and bike).  You could also do the 5K by running or walking.  The other alternative is grab some friends and do a relay!  There is a 15% discount for AARP members when you sign up, use  code T4CAARP.

We are starting weekly evening runs from the AARP Arizona office at 7250 N 16th St. Phoenix, AZ 85020.  Join us every Thursday at the AARP AZ office and you can run or walk with our State Director  Dana Marie Kennedy, who is devoted triathlete.  We will meet outside at 5:00 p.m. (there is plenty of visitor parking) at 7250 N. 16th Street.  We will then head out to the canal for a 30 minute walk or run (15 minutes out and 15 minutes back at your own pace).

AARP AZ hopes you will take on this fitness challenge.

Why are we exploring this fitness challenge?  The evidence is clear, diet and exercise helps decrease your risk of all kinds of chronic diseases.  We know how important it is to be connected to others, so we thought we would use the Tri for the Cure as motivation and inspiration to help you reach a new fitness goal.  Our State Director will share with you what triathlon has done for her. Not only reaching her fitness goals, but it has also connected her to a community of other triathletes and runners who stay active and engaged and they also support local charities that mutually benefit from the social connection.

Come sign up for one of the weekly walk/runs. The first one starting next Thursday, February 14th.  We didn’t plan for it to be on Valentine’s Day, but figured we would keep it as it could be a great way to spend time with your someone special. If you don’t have someone special, now you have a great way to spend Valentine’s Day by giving yourself the gift of health.  We will continue these walk runs every Thursday at 5:00 pm until the Race for the Cure on March 17th.

See you at the canal on the following dates. Make sure to RSVP by clicking on date:
