If you are a family caregiver chances are that you have also become a health and financial manager, carrying out medical and financial tasks for your spouse or loved one, that traditionally were handled by health care providers. Today many caregivers like yourself are expected to carry out these complex tasks often with little to no preparation, training or support.

Know that you are not alone. For this reason, AARP is working with 211 LA, and USC’s Family Caregiver Support Center to offer support through a community program called Ayudando a Quien Ayuda™ (Helping the Helper™), designed for caregivers seeking guidance and resources to help care for a family member or close friend with one or more chronic medical conditions.

We encourage you to dial 2-1-1 if you or someone you know is spending several hours a week or more helping a loved one with activities of daily living such as:

  • Dressing, bathing, household chores, doctor appointments, preparing meals, managing finances, administering medication or other medical needs.

Information, resources and assistance for this program works as follows:

  • Dial 2-1-1: To speak with a bilingual Community Resource Advisor who will gather information about your unique caregiving situation. With your permission, the 211 LA advisor will provide your information to the USC Family Caregiver Support Center. The operator can also provide you with readily available caregiving resources close to you. Your information is kept private and confidential.
  • USC Family Caregiver Support Center: Will contact you to further assess your needs and provide supportive services that may include additional information, assessment, individual consultations, respite, education, and training to help maintain your loved one’s independence and abilities, while also helping you care for yourself, and manage your own well-being.
  • Caregiver Experience Check-in: An AARP Volunteer Care Coordinator will get in touch with you to learn about your experience on the path to receiving support.

Ayudando a Quien Ayuda (Helping the Helper) serves select communities in southeastern Los Angeles County. If you live outside the service area, 211 LA is still able to help you find information and resources available across Los Angeles County.

Additionally, Vision y Compromiso, a nationally respected organization dedicated to improving the health and well-being of communities will conduct caregiving workshops throughout Los Angeles through its network of Promotores.
