AARP Hearing Center
Aging with Dignity and Public Policy
Join AARP Florida and United Way Miami, along with Miami-Dade County experts in aging, and elected officials to learn about issues older adults face and how laws, regulations and funding priorities can help our community age gracefully and with respect.
The event will take place at Miami Dade College North Campus on October 3, 2023 and will be comprised of three separate panels. Gabriel Parra and The Arc of South Florida will lead panel number one, Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) & Long-term Care, which will address the needs of people with functional limitations who need assistance with everyday activities. These services are often designed to enable people to stay in their homes, rather than moving to a facility for care. In this session we’ll review various pertinent issues related to helping adults age gracefully where they feel most comfortable and secure.
Ivonne Fernandez, Associate State Director for Advocacy in AARP Florida will lead the second panel, Affordable Housing & Homelessness. The panel will focus on people of all ages and ability levels need accessible and affordable housing choices that will enable them to continue living safely in their homes and communities as they get older. The panel of experts and lawmakers will review how public policies currently address and could aid in helping older adults secure and maintain comfortable living options.
Older adults are at significant risk of experiencing some form of financial abuse, and fraud continues to pose a financial threat to many Floridians. The third and final panel, Financial Stability & Consumer Protection, led by Carolina Veira from CareMax, will offer tools and resources will present recent policy changes to protect vulnerable adult victims – even from their own family members – and will discuss legislative changes to better protect consumers from financial exploitation, scams, and fraud.
This event will be interpreted live in Spanish, Creole and American sign language. To register to attend the summit, click here.
