KINSTON -- Housing needs change as we age. But it's possible for our homes and communities to be livable for people of all ages and life stages.

Like many parts of the state and nation, older adults in Pitt and Lenoir Counties are often challenged by the lack of affordable, suitable housing that can help them age in their homes and communities.

With the assistance of the RL Mace Universal Design Institute, AARP North Carolina held two Community Forums that brought together national, state, and community leaders to find ways to increase and improve housing options with a special focus on the role that accessory dwelling (ADU’s) can play in in Pitt County, and options for rural housing in Lenoir County.

Commonly known as backyard bungalows, garage apartments and so-called "granny flats," ADUs are small homes that exist on the same property lot as a single-family residence.

To learn more about age-friendly housing, including innovative ideas and free publications, you can explore the topic on the AARP Livable Communities site.
