AARP Utah Hosts 2024 Volunteer Recognition & Andrus Award Dinner

Posted on 10/01/24 by AARP Utah

AARP Utah celebrated our 2024 Volunteer Recognition & Andrus Award Ceremony this year at the Viridian Event Center in West Jordan.

Joined by attendees both virtually and in-person, the event honored the extraordinary AARP volunteers we have in our community, and the amazing things they achieve.

We recognized 20 individuals from across the state who were nominated as exceptional volunteers in their community. They were recognized for enhancing the lives of others by improving their community, and inspiring others to volunteer.

The event also announced the recipient of the 2024 Andrus Award named in honor of AARP’s founder Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus. The Andrus Award celebrates and honors those who make a difference in the lives of others, and it is the most prestigious and visible award AARP presents each year.

This year's recipient is Lloyd Blackburn, is a shining example of the power that volunteers have to make their communities better.

Lloyd has been a joyful and enthusiastic volunteer since he started with AARP’s Driver Safety program in 2011. Since then, he’s taught more than 290 Driver Safety classes at 16 different Salt Lake County Senior Centers and Community Centers across the valley.

Last year, Lloyd taught 58 classes total, just one class short of teaching the most courses across the AARP Driver Safety Program nationwide!

Lloyd is also a dedicated advocate for retired and rescued greyhounds. He also volunteers his time at Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area in Davis County as a guide.

Recently, Lloyd was interviewed by KSL-TV about this recognition; to watch his story, click here.
