Local Spotlight

Caregiving in your community

Local Spotlight

Hi! I’m Amy Goyer, AARP’s Family and Caregiving Expert, author of Juggling Life, Work and Caregiving, and, most importantly, I am caregiving for my 93-year-old Dad, Robert, who has advanced Alzheimer’s Disease and lives with me in the Phoenix area—Chandler—where he has lived since 1981 when he came to Chair the Communication department at ASU.

Initially I was a long-distance caregiver for my parents, and nine years ago I moved to Chandler from Washington, DC to take care of both of my parents. My Mom passed on four years ago and we miss her terribly. I came to Phoenix with very little knowledge about local supports for those who are aging or disabled and no connections for caregiver support. It can be overwhelming to navigate the legal, financial, health and housing issues, especially while providing hands-on care.

As caregivers, we need support too—dealing with the emotional and physical energy depletion, coordinating our caregiving tasks and teams, juggling work and other life responsibilities and planning for the future. I deal with these challenges every single day. That’s why I understand first-hand how important it is to be able to network with other caregivers and tap into local resources throughout our caregiving journey. I have worked in the field of aging for more than 35 years, but, like you, caregiving is still a huge challenge for me. I find that there are always new local resources to learn about!

That’s what this space is all about – making it easier for you, the caregiver (or potential caregiver), to navigate the complexities, share the challenges, and celebrate the joys of caring for your loved ones who live in the Phoenix area.

The online AARP Caregiving Resource Center is a great place to go for comprehensive information and tools for the various issues of caregiving (also check out my articles and videos there with practical tips for caregivers!). And this is your go-to page for resources and support close to home -- and to connect with other local caregivers. Read through or download our local Phoenix Metro Caregiver Resource Guide, participate in the “Caregiving in the Phoenix Area” topic thread in AARP’s Online Caregiving Community, check out events taking place in your neighborhoods, and find solutions to your caregiving needs.

We hope you will visit often, share the resources you know about and spread the word to other Phoenix area caregivers. Your input as caregivers is invaluable. Please share your feedback and let us know if there is a caregiver, volunteer, organization or local resource that should be featured here - in the Phoenix area caregiving ‘Spotlight’. Email us at caregivingphoenix@aarp.org.

I hope to meet you in person at a local Phoenix caregiving event—also connect with me on Facebook and Twitter. I’d love to hear from you!
