First Day Hike at South Yuba River State Park

About the Event

First Day Hikes is a national-led effort that encourages individuals and families to experience, with a seasoned guide, the beautiful natural and cultural resources found in the outdoors and in doing so may inspire them to take advantage of these treasures throughout the year and an individual’s lifetime. Nature has been proven to boost our moods and make us feel healthy and exploring the outdoors is the perfect way to start the new year.

Location: Meet at the Independence Trail Trailhead. From Nevada City, head north on Highway 49 for about 6.1 miles. Put Independence Trail Nevada City into Apple or Google Maps. There will be a pullout with a rock wall on the right before you get to the highway 49 bridge. A state parks volunteer will meet you by the bathrooms at the start of the trail.

Parking: Pull straight in perpendicular to the rock wall. Do not parallel park. Be careful pulling out as Highway 49 can be busy. There is also a larger pullout 200 yards down the road with stairs that lead up to the trail.

What to Expect: The Independence Trail follows the excelsior ditch and is a flat, easy walk. Hike will be 2-3 miles depending on time and will include information about the plants, animals, rocks, and history of the river canyon. Questions? wyatt.grognet@parks.ca.gov.

Length of Hike: 2.5 mile, 2 hours

Preparation: Wear sturdy walking shoes that can handle mud and slick surfaces. Dress in layers as the trail runs along a north facing slope and temperatures can be chilly.

Special Instructions: This hike is weather dependent and will be canceled in the event of inclement weather.

Ages: Ages 8 and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
