This Tuesday Explorers presentation will take you on a journey through the central concepts of Zen Buddhism as expressed in Japanese art.
About the Event
In this Tuesday Explorers class, Professor Laura McCloskey of George Mason University will explore how the central concepts of Zen Buddhism are evidenced in Japanese art. She will examine how, beginning in the Middle Ages, Japanese Buddhist monks and skilled artisans have incorporated simplicity and a visual appreciation for the ephemeral into the Japanese artistic ethos.
Concepts to be addressed include:
- The life and teachings of Daruma
- Tea ceremonies
- Zen gardens
- Renga poetry
- Zenga painting styles
