AARP Hearing Center
Tune in for an entertaining and instructive exploration of what fraud as portrayed by Hollywood tells us about the wily deceptions of actual con artists.
About the Event
Join us for a fresh take on fraud prevention! Be entertained (but not deceived) as we consider the confidence game as portrayed by Hollywood.
This 90-minute seminar will use classic con films such as The Lady Eve (1941), The Hustler (1961) and The Usual Suspects (1999) to explore the mechanisms that make crimes of confidence and trust possible in fiction and in real life.
As in film, for example, an actual con artist is basically a good storyteller who creates and exploits a heightened emotional state. Hollywood plots run on a “ticking clock” story pattern, and real-life fraudsters also often create a sense of urgency that doesn’t allow the victim time to reflect.
We hope you’re entertained as we lay bare the mechanics of a good con that you should guard against in real life.
