Join us to revisit the funny short movies that gave Americans a happy respite during the Great Depression and launched many of Hollywood’s great stars.
About the Event
Hollywood’s screwball comedies hit the spot during the Great Depression, when 50 percent of Americans went to the movies weekly to escape their challenges. Short in duration and filled with outlandish situations, these films were right for the moment and are still relevant today.
We will consider the star-making roles that screwball comedies offered Cary Grant, Henry Fonda, Clark Gable, Gary Cooper, Katharine Hepburn, Barbara Stanwyck, Claudette Colbert and Irene Dunne, who took advantage of the opportunity to show off their comedic gifts. We’ll explore common themes, actors’ backstories and how the films were received.
Lively chat is encouraged, and the speaker will leave time for questions. This session is sure to make participants laugh and connect and to spark pleasurable memories of first seeing the films!
