From 12:00pm to 1:30pm Eastern Time
There is no better time to be inspired unto good works. A work that causes us to listen to each other. A work that builds community, and a work that asks each one of us, “Where am I in this story to disrupt disparities and inequities?” AARP in Ohio is taking a close look at the local and statewide landscape, continually educating ourselves, and asking how we can continue to disrupt disparities.
We can by collaborating with St. Vincent de Paul to offer two virtual experiences, Misconceptions of Poverty followed by a Poverty Simulation to experience a day in the life of someone living in poverty.
So if you’ve wondered what it’s like to experience poverty, now is your chance to see how together we can let our lights shine and help make a change for the betterment of humanity.
REGISTER to attend one or more of these virtual events and the link will be emailed to you following registration. Registration for this screening is highlighted in red. Visit www.aarp.org/cincinnati to register for the other virtual events in this series.
Misconceptions of Poverty
April 20, 2021 from 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm
May 4, 2021 from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm
We all have beliefs about poverty and those who experience it, especially if we have had no personal experience of living in poverty. Many of these beliefs are formed in our childhood. We also develop opinions based on the media and our personal experiences with poverty. In this session, we will explore some of the most common myths about poverty, the truths behind them, and how we can talk about poverty in productive and honest ways.
April 27, 2021 from 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm
May 11, 2021 from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm
St. Vincent de Paul Cincinnati’s Poverty Simulation challenges participants to walk in the shoes of our neighbors in need for over an hour—to explore poverty experientially. The objective is to help people in our community better understand the realities of living in poverty, to grow in solidarity and to take action on behalf of our neighbors in need. Participants take on an identity—a unique persona—developed by the Ozanam Center for Service Learning, based on the lived experience of neighbors who have entrusted St. Vincent de Paul staff and volunteers with their stories.
