Larry Lipman: 2024 AARP Virginia President’s Award
Larry Lipman, the executive editor for State News at the AARP Bulletin until his retirement in 2018, boasts an illustrious career. Before his tenure at AARP, he served as the Palm Beach Post Washington, D.C. bureau chief for Cox Media Group. Additionally, he contributed his expertise as an adjunct professor of journalism at The George Washington University and held the esteemed position of president at the National Press Club.
Following retirement, Lipman, who lives in Falls Church, returned to AARP as a dedicated volunteer and integral member of the Virtual Volunteer Newsroom and as a member of the AARP Virginia Speaker’s Bureau. Within these roles, he assumed the responsibility of editing articles authored by more than a dozen people on the newsroom team. Despite unforeseen conditions that left Larry the lone editor, Larry admirably shouldered the entire editing workload, showcasing his professionalism and commitment. He also regularly presents Sorting Fact from Fiction, a workshop on how to detect fake news.
“On a personal note, I hold Larry in high regard for his remarkable ability to enhance my writing, transforming it into a polished piece,” AARP Virginia State President Joyce Williams said while presenting Lipman the Award on April 26, 2024. “For his invaluable contributions to the whole team and to telling the AARP story, I extend my heartfelt gratitude. Therefore, it is with great pleasure that I present Larry with the President's Award in recognition of his unwavering dedication and exceptional service to us all.”
In his free time, Lipman can be found performing magic in the D.C. metro area as Lorenzo the Great.
The President’s Awards for Community Service are given to deserving individuals or groups chosen at the discretion of AARP Virginia State President Joyce Williams, of Roanoke, to recognize the significant contributions they have made to the work of AARP Virginia over the last year.
