The American Red Cross responds to a disaster every 8 minutes. That's an average of more than 60,000 disasters every year. The vast majority of these disaster responses are home fires or other local emergencies to which Disaster Action Team volunteers respond. Local Disaster Action Teams are ready to respond 24 hours/day and 365 days/year when the need arises.
Disaster Action Teams are the first line to provide care, comfort and compassion. When responding to an emergency, volunteers work in teams of 2 or more. The work of a Disaster Action Team can be emotional, but also deeply rewarding to be able to provide support and assistance to someone in one of their darkest moments. The Red Cross provides all the training needed and all new members are paired with an experienced member to provide guidance. Being part of a Disaster Action Team is a great way to meet new people from all walks of life.
There are regular team meetings and ongoing training opportunities for personal growth, leadership positions and national deployments. The Red Cross aspires to be an organization fully committed to diversity and inclusion by creating and maintaining a diverse workforce which helps to ensure culturally competent service delivery.
