Spring is in the air (well, nearly) and getting outside for a good walk is not only important health-wise but also in building community and connecting with friends and neighbors. Modeled on our weekly community walks along the Kennebec River in Hallowell, we're looking to expand this effort to put more community members on the walking trails and paths all over Maine!
Walk Captains will be charged with being the lead organizer of a weekly or monthly walk in their own communities, working with AARP Maine staff and other volunteers.
Key tasks include:
Researching and selecting an appropriate walking trail or path suitable for a small group.
Choosing a regular time and time of day to begin walking.
Prioritizing safety by making sure walkers have appropriate footwear, don't become too spread out (or are able to walk in small groups), and making sure any new attendees sign a seasonal waiver before hitting the trail.
Help with promotion in community by sharing event details (time, location, etc).
Take pictures and share stories!
We'll support each walk by promoting to our incredible member community here in Maine of nearly 230,000 statewide!
Why walking? Consistent and regular walking has shown to be a health boon for all ages, and especially for older adults:
Reduces memory problems
Enhances overall mood
Lower blood pressure
Strengthens muscles and loosens stiff joints
Preserve and strengthen bones
Benefits of daylight and sun!
These health benefits are clear. What we need is local volunteers to help jumpstart opportunities for all to get out there and walk! Be a part of this local effort to get more Mainers back on their feet and moving one step at a time.
