About Us:
The Smedleys have been in the golf business for half a century. After the success of his Loch Nairn Golf Course, which opened in Avondale, Pa. in 1972, the family came to Harford County, Maryland in 1990 looking for an area not already saturated by golf courses.
Henry and Chris Smedley designed The Wetlands golf course and a family-owned construction company built it, with virtually no outside contracting or help – a credo which remains at The Wetlands to this day.
“We designed it, we built it and we operate it,” says Henry Smedley.
"Only two percent of all golf courses in the nation are owner built and operated," says Sam Smedley. "Every aspect of it we do in family,” he adds.
The Wetlands opened nine holes for business in 1994 and in 1995 added the second nine holes to complete the golf course.
In a five year period The Wetlands Golf Course and the Smedleys have helped local charities raise more than a million dollars through golf tournaments.
The golf course is also home to First Tee, a program in which LPGA instructors are matched with disadvantaged and urban youth to learn golf as well as life lessons. It is also Harford Technical High School's home course for 40 days a year for golf practices and matches with other schools.
“We want to be a quality facility for a reasonable price and be an amenity to all aspects of the community,” says Sam Smedley.
