As Ramona Valley begins the journey to become a southern California Wine Mecca, one place that holds true to this vision is the valleys own, Turtle Rock Ridge Vineyard Winery. Sweeping views, relaxing atmosphere and exquisite wine are enough to entice the average wine connoisseur to visit, but it’s more than just that!
TRR came to fruition after the devastation of the 2007 Witch Creek wildfire. While growing grapes had always been an idea, now the land and space was cleared in order to make it a reality. For years, Laurie and Ian had studied different varieties of grapes and what would thrive in the Ramona Valley.
They chose to plant varietals that they enjoyed, such as Zinfandel, Merlot, Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Sangiovese Brunello. In the fall of 2008, they made their first vintage, from their friends Paul and Kristi’s Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. After the experience of fermenting grapes into wine, Laurie knew she had found her calling. From pitching the yeast, to punching down the cap and pressing the wine, she loved every aspect and had discovered her new passion, wine making.
Together over the next 5 years they worked hard and continuing to evolve their craft creating wine that seems to please every palate. They began to create bold full-bodied red wines that are very fruit forward and flavorful. Embracing the attributes of each season and the flavors they bring to each wine grape vintage.
As their children left to begin their journey on to college, Laurie and Ian decided it was time to take their hobby to the next level. They began to focus on the idea of a tasting room where people could come and taste their delicious wine in a comfortable and enjoyable atmosphere. Their desire is to make wine tasting like you are sitting at a friend or neighbor’s house and creating memories. Opening their tasting room with their own hand-crafted red wines that appeal to a variety of different tastes is a dream come true. As they continue to evolve and perfect their unique style they will always believe in the process, where wine is art.
