SCS History
Sunnyside Community Services (SCS) was started by a group of older adults in 1974, as a tiny senior center in a church basement, to give older residents “a place to go.” Responding to community needs over the years, we have grown to become the largest community-based social service agency in Western Queens, now reaching over 14,000 residents. The Senior Center now has a roster of more than 2,000 members and provides services to many more seniors during the course of a year.
Other services for older adults include adult day programs for physically frail seniors and one for seniors with Alzheimer’s and other cognitive impairments. In 1975 volunteers began a program of visits and telephone reassurance to homebound neighbors. This program grew and became incorporated as Sunnyside Home Care Project (SHCP), a licensed home care agency that now provides 54,000 hours of home care services each week to 1,500 homebound residents. Volunteers still visit and call frail seniors, and more than 450 volunteers each year now provide assistance in all of our programs.
