About Us:

The History of McCree Theatre is, indeed, chronicled in chapters. The “Old” McCree Theatre, which relied primarily upon entitlements, reigned from inception in 1970 to 1989, when it went into an extended hiatus. The era of the “New” McCree Theatre began in 2004 with a new philosophy and a renewed commitment to excellence, but in a makeshift theatre space that, in actuality, was a hand-me-down from the “Old.”

We have now further separated ourselves from the past with a “new venue” and a “new verve.” With its relocation to the Urban League of Flint facility, with its 220-seat theatre, McCree Theatre is at long last in a space that was built for theatre. Our vision is to transform this space into one the entire community can be proud of, and into one that becomes this region’s pre-eminent entertainment destination.

Since its establishment in 1970, the mission of McCree Theatre has remained the same– to tell the African American Story in the African American Voice. In its heyday, McCree Theatre offered a variety of classes and workshops in the arts in addition to a series of mainstage productions. Today,  the “New” McCree Theatre expressly utilizes its mainstage productions as learning laboratories in  dance, drama, music and all other aspects of the performing arts.
