Every year, over 35,000 patrons pass through the doors of the Metropolitan Theatre to experience a one-of-a-kind show. We are proud to present a wide variety of concerts, plays, films, and performances.

The MET hosts everything from regional and national touring performers to local performing arts organizations and artists.

The MET also has a great working relationship with local organizations such as West Virginia University, the Monongalia Board of Education, the Morgantown Theatre Company as well as many other local businesses. There is something for everyone when attending a show at the MET!

A Little History

In 1924, the Metropolitan Theatre opened it’s doors to the public as a vaudeville house designed by Charles W. Bates and was granted the title of “West Virginia’s Most Beautiful Playhouse”. Only two years after the theatre was established, a fire destroyed much of the interior of the building. After repairs and new decor were completed, the theatre went on for the next seven decades hosting some of the most popular entertainers of the time, providing arts and entertainment for residents and visitors alike.

In the early 1980s the MET fell on hard times and closed their doors for many years but in 1984 the theatre was added to National Register of Historic Places as a reminder of its historical significance.

In 1990, groups of concerned citizens began efforts to renovate and revitalize the historic theatre. In 2003, the MET was gifted to the City of Morgantown and is now operated and maintained by the Department of Arts & Cultural Development.

The Metropolitan Theatre has always been a cultural anchor in the Downtown Historic District of Morgantown. It is one of the better surviving examples of the neoclassical revival architecture in the region.

The MET has supported the thriving arts and culture district of Morgantown for nearly 100 years and counting.
