About us:

The Margaret E. Heggan Free Public Library of the Township of Washington will be the community’s primary resource, through print and non-print resources, for knowledge, information, and enjoyment, with emphasis on convenient accessibility and customer-oriented service.  The Library will strive to:

-Provide materials, with an emphasis on printed media, which are of most interest to users of all ages; especially preschool and adult age groups who have no other library at their disposal;

-Instill a love of reading and learning, and a familiarity with the Library, in all residents but especially in preschool children from infancy through the kindergarten age;

-Provide prompt and accurate information to individuals, groups, businesses, and government in our community

-Assist elementary and secondary students with information, materials, and services which support their formal education assignments and interests.

History:

In 1965 a group of nine civic-minded women known as the Whitman Square Women’s Club felt that there was a need for public library service in this fast-growing community.The first meeting was set up and held on February 10, 1965 at 8 p.m. in the Community Club House; forty people attended this meeting. At this time the needs, objectives, and governing structure of the new association were announced.

The Provident Corporation, developers of Whitman Square, offered the association the use of the “Russian House”, a 24 x 16 foot box-type structure as a temporary library facility. It was moved from Whitman Square to a piece of township owned land on Ganttown Road.The library was officially opened for patrons on March 2, 1966.

50 years later the Margaret E. Heggan Free public library continues to serve its community. Join us as we celebrate the past fifty years and the prospect of many more to come.
