Terrien, like Baker, Miller, Sawyer, Carpenter and Taylor, is a surname that refers to my family's occupation a long while ago. The Terriens I know don't work the earth much anymore, but as my Aunt Cecie told me, "Remember the potsherd in Iran that was thought to be the earliest evidence of winemaking...? Well, if your grandfather were here today, he would assure you that a Terrien had been present." This street sign comes from a tiny village near Saumur, where my forebears surely drank wine before my Calvinist great-grandmère disrupted things.
