Sutter Union High School

History

The Sutter Union High School was the first High School in Sutter County established in September 1893 with only 18 students. The High School was held on the upper floor classrooms of the Brittan School. Students from 15 districts attended the high school in Sutter. Many Students boarded with local family's during the school week, returning home only periodically during the school year. J.C. Ray was the first principal of Sutter High School. 1896 was the year of the first graduating class. It consisted of Florence Davis, Maude Hawley, William Hoffman, and Hattie Wren.

In 1910 it was decided that a new school needed to be built. The new school was dedicated March 13, 1913. On December 1, 1917 the school went through expansion with new classrooms, a library, a new gymnasium, and an athletic field offering a better educational environment than ever seen before in this area.

Students attended this school until it burned down Thanksgiving Day, 1961. The Gymnasium was the only building to survive. The community immediately sent in volunteered, sending in equipment and supplies. Yuba-Sutter residents even let their churches be used as classrooms for the school.

Ground breaking for the current school took place March 6, 1963. It was completed on July 1, 1964 and opened to students in September.
