About
The Society was founded in 1982 by a group of individuals committed to preserving the history of Whitefish and the Flathead Valley for the present and future. Since its inception the Society has grown to over 200 members from all parts of the United States and Canada. In 1990 the Society acquired the Whitefish Railway Depot from the Burlington Northern Railroad and a Depot Committee was formed to oversee its restoration. The project took three years, hundreds of volunteer hours and generous monetary donations to complete. The interior was completely remodeled to accommodate new office space which included the Amtrak waiting room. The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad now occupies the entire second floor. The third floor houses several other businesses and the offices of the Historical Society. The exterior has been restored to its original Glacier National Park chalet-like appearance. It was built by the Great Northern Railway in 1927 for $65,000.
Adjacent to the Amtrak waiting room is the Whitefish Museum which has many fascinating railroad and community artifacts and information. Our museum staff is present during museum hours to answer any questions you have about Whitefish, the Flathead Valley and the museum.
