About the Gallery
Some time ago, there was quite a wonderful little shop called Old World Antiques on 57th Street between Park and Lexington Avenues. It was presided over by my great uncle Fred Spanierman, who left Vienna in 1902. Nearby was the old Savoy Art and Auction Gallery. Founded in 1928 and overseen by my father, Samuel Spanierman, it was located at 5 East 59th Street and later moved to 50th Street across from Saint Patrick’s Cathedral.
In 1994, after many years at 50 East 78th Street, the gallery moved to a large and luxurious space at 45 East 58th Street and began to present museum-quality exhibitions that included loans from museums and private collections. The gallery expanded in 2006 to include Spanierman Modern, which opened next door. Both spaces became among the city’s premier showcases for traditional, modern, and contemporary art.
In the fall of 2013, the gallery moved to a 14,000 square foot space at 625 West 55th Street, between 11th and 12th Avenues. In a beautiful and spacious environment, overlooking the river, the gallery maintains its commitment to the finest American art from the colonial period to the present. The location provides exciting new possibilities for exhibitions, and we continue to greet visitors with the attentiveness and welcome that we have always shown.
