About Us:

In 1988, Cedric and Emily Shaw of Littleton retired from farming. They gathered their machinery and farming implements along with family furnishings spanning three generations. The Shaws cleaned out their barn and began displaying their collection. They established the “Pastime Museum”. As they showed visitors through their displays, the collection began to grow with donations from individuals. In 1991, a group of local residents envisioned having a public museum to house such a collection of memorabilia. In 2001, that dream was realized with the purchase of the former Littleton Elementary School. The Shaws offered to move their collection from their “Pastime Museum” to the newly named Southern Aroostook Agricultural Museum. Since June of 2002, volunteers have been busy rebuilding rooms, arranging the many antiques and paying off a $51,000.00 mortgage. Luther and Kay Grass also added a spectacular collection of tools now housed in “The Grass Tool Room”. Other projects have been: This Old House, the model Potato House, the moving of the local Ross Ridge one room schoolhouse into the museum yard. Our latest project is a new barn. After a lot of fund raising, we have completed a 60’X100’ barn to house several large pieces of equipment. With the help of the Houlton Rotary Club, Rural Development-USDA, Maine Community Foundation, Naturally Potatoes and many individuals this dream is now a reality. We were proud to name our barn The Carl & Helen Hagan Barn after our President and his wife. Our thanks to everyone that has contributed in any way to the success of our museum.

With your ongoing support we will continue to collect and preserve, The Heritage of the County.
