About Salmen High School...

The American space adventure created instant growth and prosperity in the Slidell area in the mid-60's. To meet the increased enrollment of students, Salmen High School was created in 1965.

During the 1965 school year, the school was housed in the former Our Lady of Lourdes school building located on Second Street. At the beginning of the 1966-67 school year, the school was relocated to the present 37-acre site, a portion of which was donated by the Salmen Family Foundation. The first phase, serving grades seven through nine, was completed in the early part of 1966. Each successive year brought an additional grade, an enlarged student body, and an expanded curriculum. Eventually, the seventh and eighth grades were dropped.

The first senior class graduated from Salmen High School in 1970, the same year that we were accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

The school plant has been expanded to accommodate the increased enrollment, with several additions being made over the last 15 years. The additions made to the school plant and facilities in the spring of 1979 included a permanent structure for our music department, expansion of our technology education department, and a separate facility to house the library and the media center. In 1981 a cafetorium, band and shop facilities, and new classrooms were added. Another addition created a new faculty lounge, workrooms, an administrative area, and a viewing room. The Salmen campus now has a modern sports facility complex. Extensive renovation has taken place to the administrative complexes. Salmen has also gained twelve permanent modular classrooms, several computer resource labs, a conference room, and additional faculty/student bathroom facilities. Phases one and two of a three-phase electrical system upgrade and phases one and two of a three-phase technology upgrade have been completed. This includes installation of Internet service connections in the main building, the purchase of personal computers for all classrooms along with acquisition of appropriate educational software. Salmen High has 7 fully networked computer labs with anywhere from 12-30 computers per network. The newest is a 30 station lab made possible by a state grant in May 2000. Bids are now being taken to wire the school for full Internet use as well as closed-circuit television. This project will be undertaken in the 2000-2001 school year.

With the passage of a recent bond issue, Salmen is also slated to begin construction of six new science labs. Plans are being finalized at this time and construction should begin within the next few months. Our school is also receiving a new athletic track this year and has installed electronic bleachers in the gym.
