Ruth Walgreen Franklin and Winifred Fels Memorial Sanctuary

The Franklin-Fels Sanctuary is located between Titicus Road (Route 116) and Hardscrabble Road on the north side of Titicus Reservoir in North Salem. Consisting of mainly low deciduous woodlands, Red Maple Swamp and Shrub Swamp, this sanctuary provides for easy walking with few steep inclines. An unmarked trail system exists that generally loops the visitor around the entire sanctuary.

The visiting birdwatcher may find Barred Owl, Wild Turkey, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Great Crested Flycatcher, Pileated Woodpecker, Louisiana Waterthrush, and Worm-eating Warbler. This property has existed in an undeveloped state for many years while in Bedford Audubon's possession. Recently, work has begun to establish a marked trail system, foot bridges, parking area and signage for the property. Improvements to the sanctuary will continue to be made over the next few years.
