Ross Rogers Golf Complex is one of two 36 hole golf complexes owned by the City of Amarillo (Comanche Trail Golf Complex 4200 South Grand). The original 18 hole Ross Rogers Golf Course was constructed in 1939 with Work Progress Administration (WPA) funding and opened in 1940. The course was named after Ross D. Rogers who served as Mayor from 1932 to 1941. During his term, he managed to build a golf course during the great depression. The facility was expanded to 27 holes in 1959. The final 9 to complete the 36 hole complex was opened in 1978. The existing facility has two 18 hole courses, The Old Course (formerly known as the East Course) and WildHorse (formerly known as the West Course). The Old Course was closed March 6, 2011 to undergo an extensive renovation and rebuild. John Colligan, Principle of Colligan Golf Design and former Amarillo High graduate Trey Kemp are heading up the design on the project. Landscapes Unlimited, LLC was selected as the general contractor for the project scheduled to open in summer of 2012. The West Course was closed in April 2002 for a total renovation by Wadsworth Golf Course Construction, of Plainfield, IL. Weibring-Wolfard Golf Design (Formerly known as GRI) of Plano, TX was the architectural firm on the project. It re-opened in April of 2004 as WildHorse. The award winning WildHorse golf course offers championship golf at affordable prices. The Player-Friendly layout can be enjoyed by players of all skill levels. WildHorse has been rated best golf course in Amarillo by the Amarillo Globe News and the Peoples Survey each year since its opening, as well as being awarded the #1 best economic value in Texas for courses $40.00 and under by the Dallas Morning News in 2007 & 2010.
