Pocahontas Island Black History Museum, located on the historic Pocahontas Island in Petersburg, VA, once a stop on the Underground Railroad, is home to a treasure trove of artifacts and other historical items of interest that showcases over 200 years of Black history. Black History and Civil War expert, Mr. Richard Stewart, is the museum's founder and orator who delights in taking museum visitors on an oral journey of Black history in Petersburg, VA.

The museum was founded by Mr. Richard Stewart, whose ancestors have lived on the island since the 1700s. The museum is a labor of love for him and he is passionate about preserving the history of the island for current and future generations. Donations are extremely welcomed, as the museum relies on donations to cover its operating expenses. Please call ahead to schedule an appointment. Bus groups, schools, tourists and lovers of history are encouraged to visit to experience the museum's unique display of historical artifacts.
