About Us:
Petworth Neighborhood Library at 4200 Kansas Avenue, N.W. was the sixth Neighborhood Library to be opened in Washington, DC, and the third to be funded strictly through public appropriations. The library opened on January 27, 1939.
The Petworth Neighborhood Library celebrated fifty-six years of service in 1994 with an open house featuring presentations on the history of the branch and the D.C. Public Library system as a whole. A "Friends" organization was established in the early 1990s, continuing to support the Petworth Branch through testimonials during budget hearings and other public discussions. The Friends of the Petworth Neighborhood Library also provides financial support for several of the library's programs.
Today, the Petworth Neighborhood Library contains 33,000 volumes and employs a staff of five, including the branch librarian, a reader's advisor, a children's librarian, a circulation desk supervisor, and a circulation desk technician. It circulates over 21,000 volumes annually, and its collection embraces such diverse subjects as African-American studies, a Spanish Language collection, Job and Employment literature, and Adult Basic Education materials. Special community programs offered by Petworth Library include a film series for seniors, Arts & Crafts for children, story time and films for children, and a community meeting room with a capacity of one hundred persons.
