Open: Year Round

Old North State Winery started as a cooperative in 2002 and has since evolved into a winery owned by two families with one vision. Our vineyards were established on farms that have been in our families for generations. We hope you enjoy the culmination of our dreams, our devotion to our farmland, and our passion for our wines produced at Old North State Winery.

Most of our wines start out as luscious wine grapes grown on Yadkin Valley North Carolina family farms. We are the Old North State Winery, Inc. located in Mount Airy, in the headwaters of the Yadkin Valley AVA. Wine, beer and fine foods are our passion and our legacy.

According to the 1890 Census North Carolina produced more wine than any other state. They held this distinction until Prohibition.  At the turn of the twentieth century, North Carolina wines won international awards at the World's Fair in Paris. We are back. Our passion is the wine and beer that we produce for your enjoyment. Our family farms have roots that run deep into the soil and soul of the Old North State. Taste our wines and beers. Share our passion for fine food, and beverages with your friends.

The Restless Soul Story

The Old North State Winery's Building was originally constructed in 1885 by Thomas Franklin Prather as a General Store. Mt. Airy is home to the world's largest open face granite quarry. Accordingly, dynamite sales became a lucrative business in the area. Legend has it that due to a disagreement with Prather, the owner of the neighboring general store set off dynamite charges along the store front in 1926. The store façade was completely destroyed and Belk's Department Stores purchased the distressed building and rebuilt the storefront remaining here till 1969. During the reconstruction, the skeletal remains of an arm were found. Still to this day no one knows to whom the arm belongs.
