Located at the southern end of Kennebec County in lush agricultural land that has become noted for the production of high quality apples, the town of Monmouth encompasses an area of almost twenty-five square miles.

Initially a part of the English Plymouth Company's grant, the town was originally incorporated as a plantation and included the territory that is now the town of Wales in Androscoggin County.
