Founded in 2001 by a group of local farmers and other interested parties, the Mohawk Valley Garlic and Herb Festival has set its roots in the community. As a non-profit agricultural festival, it is our goal to provide information to local would be farmers on the benefits of growing garlic and herbs in their gardens and farms along with inviting vendors to sell seed stock at the festival. In cooperation with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Herkimer County, we have publications for sale, lectures and classes preceding and during the festival on growing and storing garlic. We see ourselves as a learning resource and outlet for those cottage industries looking to produce and sell their food products, providing the resources and information for licensing and selling. We invite local entertainment every year and encourage our local artisan merchants and eateries to partake in the festival. We have been fortunate enough to include the Garlic Queen Pageant which benefits scholarships in the Miss Mohawk Valley program. We have also had the wonderful support from the Mohawk Valley Center for the Arts and one third of all admissions goes to support their efforts in the arts community.
Our vision as a board is for the festival to continually be held in Canal Place, Little Falls, NY. We see it growing to include the arts culture including music and artisans. We look forward to including the Erie Canal in our festivities with Herb walks, boat tours and Moss Island informational tours. We plan on continuing to educate the public on the benefits of supporting local farmers and producers.
The Garlic and Herb Festival Committee is formed for the purpose of creating an event that focuses on the education of the community as to the benefits of sustaining local agriculture. It shall be the committee's intent to hold a festival centered in Canal Place each fall that promotes the production and consumption of garlic and herbs through artistic display, educational classes, entertainment, and a peddlers market.
